Re: [RC] More questions about sweaty shaggy horses. - Sisu West Ranch"...The barn owner told me he was at risk for pneumonia....." Before I met Wendy I was dating a woman who had her horse in a boarding barn. Every year pneumonia would go through the barn. It never hit the pasture boarded horses, just the horses stalled in the heated area. The owners were sure that the solution was to turn up the heat, and put blankets on the horses. I went into the show barn area one time. I immediately knew what the problem was. The ammonia fumes from the urine were so strong that my eyes started to water. The horses were in a poorly ventalated area, their lungs were irritated by ammonia, and the germs could be passed from horse to horse. They were standing around so they did not breath deeply. I can not think of a better way to produce a bunch of sick horses.
