Re: [RC] Random thoughts on hard muscles - Beverley H. Kane, MD

Tying up (exertional rhabdomyolysis) is the contraction of acutely inflamed
muscles--spasm if you will--similar to (but by a different mechanism from)
the "charley horse" that humans get from muscle strain typically in the
thigh muscles.

The marathon runner's--and cyclist's and body builder's--calves and butt and
pecs and quads and 6-pak are the result of chronic muscle hypertrophy
(increased size of muscle cells) and hyperplasia (increased numbers of
muscle cells) from exercise. When you "go for the burn" in muscular
activity, you are actually rupturing muscle fibers that then grow back
larger, stronger, and w/ multiple replacement fibers.
