RE: [RC] The Big Tent (was:BC at Desert Gold) - heidi

I certainly don't want to get in the argument here about LD and BC
(especially since I know nothing about it!) -- but just as a side point,
since NATRC was brought up -- NATRC does not give BC awards, in any
division.

Besides, I wouldn't think that anyone who wanted to "race" (since this seems
to be part of the concern?) would want to ride in NATRC, because you can't
race at the ctr's...there is a *minimum* as well as a maximum time schedule
to follow.

Actually, NATRC (or any other CTR) IS essentially just one big giant BC
judging. The time difference is nullified by making all the riders go
approximately the same speed. The score is essentially one big vet
score (although some organizations do throw in a few points for a few
other things). And the best of said "vet scores" is the winner.

Many on these lists have touted the benefits of riding CTR as an
educational prelude to starting in endurance. And they have a very
valid point. The process of going through the scoring is a good
learning opportunity, and you have a written "critique" from the vet at
the end.

Some areas don't have CTR. AERC LD is all they have. And AERC LD BC
provides a very similar opportunity for those riders who are going at a
somewhat faster rate than some of the others--the very ones who NEED the
input. It gives the rider a post-ride "score card" and an opportunity
to go through an even more comprehensive exam, so that those riders
have a) a more in-depth opportunity to learn by presenting their horses
in a more detailed fashion, b) an extra opportunity to converse with the
vet about their horses, and c) (if the vets will USE the opportunity
given them) a written feedback on their horse's strengths and
weaknesses post-ride on that day.

Again, I fail to see why, in some locales, there is such resistance to
this positive step.
