[RC] Another slant on LD BC - Dot Wiggins

All AERC members pay the same dues, no matter what distance they ride, or even if they don't ride at all.
The post ride fees are sent in by by the RM, but they are paid by each entrant in all distances as part of entry fees. Dues and rider fees cover the cost of AERC's operations including year end awards. Everyone pays the same.

AERC has a broad system of regional and national awards, seasonal and life time for both riders and horses.

One of the categories covers mileage, one horse, one rider, for LD rides, both regional and national. No bonus points for placings, no points for weight divisions.
That's fine, every one has the same opportunities, they can ride however they choose, as long as they finish with the horse "Fit to Continue"
Now that AERC has chosen to make available a regional BC award for LD riders it appears that not everyone has the same opportunity to compete unless they wish to go out of region. If all rides are not using a consistent system, there is a sense of unfairness, real or perceived.

As long as there are different opportunities, perhaps there ought to be different fees? Less award, less cost? If ride "A" chooses not to give an LD BC should the rider fee be less? That ride is not a part of that award, should those riders help pay for it?

Until every one is playing the same game this dispute will continue.

Some regions have been giving placings and BC for LD rides for years. It seems some don't want to believe it but there is no more problem with "racing LDs", 4 year olds or seasoned horses, than there is at any other distance.
Once the "pulse down to finish" , and "sound to continue" was mandated that pretty much went away.

It would sure be nice if a rider could go to any ride and know what to expect on the basic format.

Just food for thought before the convention.

And in case any one is wondering, I DON'T want them blended!!
