Thanks Linda, some great thoughts there.

Speak up if I am waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay off in any of my estimates:

No land/camping fees.
Insurance costs are covered by sanctioning by AERC aren't they?
Trail marking supplies... I don't know, maybe 50??
No costs to measure the trail.
No generators, just borrowing some extension cords.
Two vets: $1000?
Meals/lodging for vets and volunteers... thanks, I'll look into that.
Farrier stand-by fee: nothing, she lives there.
Printing vet cards: nothing, I have a laser printer.
Cost of completion awards: $300?
Cost of placement awards: $50-100?
Cost of outside advertising: $100?
Postage for mailings: $30

I got a few local replies, and looked at some nearby rides, and it seems as if
$50 for the 25 and $80 for the 50 would be reasonable.  I'll adjust from there
as I get a better handle on my costs.

It is hard to tell you what to charge without knowing your expenses.  Do you
owe a land or camping fee to anyone?  What are your insurance costs?  Trail

Calculate your expenses, divide by the expected riders & add a little for
the fudge factor.

A No Frills ride DOES need to provide portapotties as not everyone has LQ
trailers or may not want to walk back to them from the vet check.
(Expecially timers, P&R folks, Vet & Vet secretaries, etc.)  A No Frills
ride usually provides portapotties and camping areas with no hook ups for
the competitors and water for the horses.  It would also need to provide
meals, beverages, morning coffee, and lodging for the vets.  Generally I
also see beverages & box lunches for the ride's volunteers.  Here in the NE,
one doesn't usually provide hay, so that is one worry off the table.

Well, I'm marching inexorably forward with my first ride management
experience,
the Hot Toddy Hustle 25/50 in Orland Maine.  It will be double-sanctioned
by
AERC and ECTRA and is tentatively scheduled for August 12, 2006.

I need to get an idea what sort of entry fees are reasonable for a 25 and
for a
50.  What would be reasonable if there were an average amount of amenities
(continental breakfast and awards dinner), but just portapotties and no
showers)?  What would be reasonable fees if it was a No Frills ride?

For that matter, what can you skip if you bill it as No Frills... do you
still
need to provide portapotties?
