[RC] Endurance racing and/or riding - Budler,Cindy - Afrox

Laney - that's a very interesting question - the types of horses and riders
that actually participate in Endurance in other countries may not be that
different from in the US - maybe it's just the acceptance of 'racing' that
is different. In Argentina there were plenty of non-racey horses - criollos,
thoroughbreds, etc, that can't really compete with the top bred Arabians,
but they and their riders are out there having fun. LD (40km) rides are
pretty big over there, lots of kids and new riders. Brazil is probably
similar, lots of families and 'participants'. Malaysia - Endurance is still
so new over there - it's hard to say, but I saw plenty of kids riding and
non-Arabian horse breeds (which is mostly all that they have at this point).
Australia? Europe? South Africa... I'm not really sure. UAE and the other
Gulf countries - I think that is the extreme end of the 'it's all about
racing' spectrum.

I can speak for the South Africans who basically ride to finish - and all of
Bruce's comments apply.
Their are those who ride to win, ride to sell the horse, ride to prove
something, ride to complete, and just ride to ride!!
The majority of the horses are Arabians but we also have all the local
breeds competing - the Nooitgedacht, the Boerperd and the Basotho pony type
as well as a lot of mixed breeds and the others like some TB(ex racehorses
mainly), Appies, Saddlers and everything in between! We have those who don't
want to ride FEI rides, those who love to ride the FEI rides and also the
others who will ride anything just to ride. Their are those who hate the
rides and riders in UAE, those who admire them and those who just see it as
a different kind of endurance - something we don't do and can't really
compete in. We have people who do try but it is either on one of our local
horses based there - or on a leased horse which is really not competition at
all. We cannot realistically compete on our own horses cos of African Horse
Sickness regulations etc so really have no choice!
That is the overwhelmong thread in endurance throughout the world- it IS the
same all over- just in some places the percentages of the groups differ!
