Re: [RC] Forgiving Brass - Shannon Chastain

This was a horse tied to the outside of a trailer during a show. the owner was
off in
a class and came back to a dead horse. A kid had thrown a firecraker under the
sleeping horse. This is why it is so hard for me to tie my horse to a trailer
at night
during a ride.

I've seen a horse who's lead did break during a struggle to get out of a
trailer and this horse was extremely fortunate not to die as it flipped over
backwards, cracked it's head on the pavement and rolled out onto oncoming
traffic in the road. The real issue is to make sure you've unclipped your
horse before you open that trailer door!

I agree I saw a horse break his neck tied to a trailer when I was a kid I
will
never forgot seeing that if he had, had a break away halter I would not seen
my first dead horse at 13. Shannon

To the one repondant who mentioned that she would not want the headstall to
give because she would not want to find an empty halter hanging to a tie
rail,
I would rather put on my hiking shoes and track down my horse than find a
horse that has sufficated himself from pulling back from the halter not
breaking.

I feel the same about people who leave halters on their horses in the
pasture or stall for that matter. If you can't catch your horse, then buy
a
Breakaway halter. I have seen too many horses hang themselves on the most
seemingly benign fixtures. You are lucky to get by with slight nerve
damage,
but death is all to common.
