Works for me.  To date not one of the horses has been dx'd with high blood pressure (although, to be fair, I am compulsively knocking on wood, since they seem determined to explore the rest of vet medicine).

Completely safe.  A water softener replaces the Ca ions with Na ions.  So you are just giving them slightly salty water.
 
The "unsafe" rumors about soft water relate to those who are told by their doctors that they have to avoid salt because of salt sensitive high blood pressure.
