[RC] Big Horn 100 Pioneers - The Big Horn Needs Your Help - tom noll

Greetings:

Since the early 1970s, the Big Horn 100 Endurance Ride has been held in the
Big Horn Mountains near Shell Wyoming. Part of the traditional route
travels along the Adelaide Trail from near the Shell Creek Ranger Station to
Adelaide Lake. About three miles of the Big Horn 100 trail lies within the
Cloud Peak Wilderness. The Big Horn 100 is one of the premiere AERC
100-mile rides.

The United States Congress designated the Cloud Peak Wilderness in 1984 with
the Wyoming Wilderness Act. The Big Horn 100 Endurance Ride predates the
designation of the Cloud Peak Wilderness by at least a decade. In 2006, for
the first time ever, the US Forest Service denied the Big Horn 100 Endurance
Ride permission to cross the Cloud Peak Wilderness.

The managers of the Big Horn 100 and I are working together to regain access
to the traditional Big Horn 100 route along the Adelaide Trail and we intend
to submit a request to the USFS. Substantiation of historical use will be
one part of our request.

I am seeking personal statements regarding the Big Horn 100 prior to 1984.
If you are one of the pioneers of our sport who participated in the Big Horn
100 before the Cloud Peak Wilderness designation in 1984, please consider
sending an email note or a personal letter to me at the address given below
stating the following:

- Your Name

- Your Address

- A personal statement indicating that you rode the Big Horn 100
Endurance Ride

- The year, or years, prior to 1984 that you rode the Big Horn 100

- A few personal recollections if you think they are appropriate

- Your signature and date (no signature necessary on email notes)

We only need a statement that you participated in the Big Horn 100 and it is
not necessary that you remember the actual trail. While I am seeking
first-person accounts, if you have a personal story about a member of your
family or a close friend who rode the trail in the early years, those
stories will be useful too. The personal statements are similar to a court
deposition and may be used as part of a legal proceeding.

Please note that we are seeking permission to traverse the Cloud Peak
Wilderness. These statements are only to substantiate historical use of the
Big Horn trails and are not meant to be a discussion of the Wilderness Act.
My belief is that the local USFS is following national USFS policy and we
stand the best chance of regaining trail access through constructive
negotiation.

PS: I talked with Jeanette Tollman and the 2007 Big Horn 100 is tentatively
scheduled for July 14th. I hope to see you there for another magic start
under the summer stars.
