RE: [RC] Pony death, question for vets or others who've experienced same - sherman

Hi Barbara,

Your pony story does sound a bit like mine, with the exception that
Muffin was still shedding as far as we knew. Who knows though, maybe she
wouldn't have in the spring. There has been a suggestion of insulin
resistance, but those ponies are generally obese and Muffin wasn't. If
she'd had the opportunity to eat herself into obesity, she would have
though, because she had done just that 3 years ago.

Thanks,
Kathy

It looked like you had so many replies I was going to pass, but now it
looks like my case was more like yours than most so I'll tell *my* pony
story.

I got my pony when she was 4, rode the tar out of her, LOVED her, kept
her even after I got horses. She had never foundered, but suddenly one
year, while on a dirt lot, started pointing one toe, then got really
lame
in that one foot. Farrier said she'd foundered (but it was just one
foot). She got better from that. Then she quit shedding. She got
extremely shaggy and didn't shed out. If I clipped her she looked great.

I clipped a 12 hand pony with SCISSORS. Boy did she look exotic!

Then one day she was walking along and just collapsed and went into a
seizure. It lasted a minute or so, then she jumped up like she was
surprised and trotted up the field. She was 17 years old. Then months
later I saw her do it again. I quit letting kids ride her because it
happened so fast when it happened. Every time she had a siezure, she'd
trot off as if nothing had happened. Then one day after eating a good
meal and licking the bucket, she walked over, collapsed and went into a
siezure. This time I couldn't get her up. She finally died with her head
in my lap. Just about killed me. :-( When she died I saw her gums and
it
looked like they were scarred up as if she had fallen other times that I
hadn't seen. I read in Equus looking for her symptoms and diagnosed it
as a Pituitary Tumor. I never heard the term Cushings till recent years.
