[RC] uterine infection, maiden mare - Sara Gooch

Are there usually obvious, visible symptoms  or indications  of  uterine infection  in a maiden mare (or any mare), or is the infection only evident  with a uterine culture?  I have a maiden mare who has very painful cycles. Palpation and ultrasound were normal.   Early this fall I started her  on a "Silver Lining" herbal formula, with the understanding that I won't really know if it relieves the pain  until she starts cycling again in the spring. But now, mid-winter, I notice unusual discharge from her vulva.
I'm assuming that means a uterine infection and will make an appointment this week to get her cultured.  But I'm wondering...has anyone had experience with a mare with painful cycles that turned out to be a uterine infection?

Thank you for any input--
