The first endurance riding 'how to' books that were written back in 70s/80s used the classic profile for the Appalousa as good conformation for endurance riding.

The foundation line appys were actually sort of popular in the 60's and 70's.  Betty Veal (ride Secty for Tevis for 49 years) bred and promoted them.  She passed away two years ago or so, but you could contact Shannon Weil at sweil at foothill dot net.  Shannon put together her memorial and has a ton of her stuff, photos, appaloosa mag endurance articles, etc.
