Re: [RC] Horse size....what gives?!?! - Truman Prevatt

My old mare is about between 15-3 and 16 hands. I had to teach her to move forward when I had my foot in the stirrup and a good hold of her mane and I gave her the que to pull me up in the saddle. Her stride was just the right length to make it work. There, however, was the one time in Mississippi at Long Leaf at about 93 miles I was freezing and got out of the saddle to walk and warm up. When I go to get back on after walking a couple of miles and warming up, I find at 95 miles my legs don't even work to get my foot to the stirrup. I couldn't find a stump, log, rock, tailgate or picnic table in sight so I ended up walking in leading her. At that point of time I would have preferred a shorter horse.

One of my biggest concerns with my little guy was that he had *such* a
short back I wasn't sure I'd be able to get a saddle that fit him *and*
me. Saddle makers tend to make the seat size in proportion to the tree
size and assume a kid rides tiny horses. Just because I'm 5' tall does
not mean I don't have a bigger butt than a 5'9 woman! He didn't work out
for me for other reasons and now I'm on a 14.3 horse. He's a little big
for me and I'd prefer 14.2 when I'm trying to get back on out on the
trail without a stump, tailgate, stool, etc. in sight. :-)
