[RC] Rides in the Parkway - Kevin Pfoertsch

Kyle -

If you haven't already done so, you might want to post this idea to the
ECTRA newslist (http://www.ECTRA.org), as what you suggest is a CTR-length
ride. However, the sanctioning issue still applies (whether AERC or
ECTRA). But, you could explore this idea for 2007.

In any case, I would second the notion that an organized pleasure ride
would be more appropriate for this location. Angie makes a good point
about riding in 'parks'. At Lehigh Parkway, park ordinances prohibit
overnight camping -- this would preclude any event running into the
evening, especially where judging would push the ride *late* into the night
(CTR judging tends not to end for 2-3 hours after the last horse crosses
the finish). Even if you are granted a special permit to hold an activity
after sundown (when the park closes), unless all of your riders are local,
this wouldn't be practical for most people.

Also, keep in mind that the staging area will have to accommodate 25-30
trailers (for a CTR with 35 max entries) -- in this day and age, few people
take small, tag-a-long trailers to competitions, so there has to be enough
room to park everybody. And don't forget you have to park your volunteers!

It's great that you are taking the initiative towards developing a new
ride. Here are some other locations in the region to research:
- Green Lane reservoir (25-mi CTR currently held in late June -- contact
Charlotte & John Collier),
- Blue Marsh (location of previous CTR's),
- Nockamixon (20 miles of trails)
- Jacobsburg State Park (18.5 miles of trails)
- Blue Mountain (Shartlesville area - previous home of Blue Mountain
Trot/Gallop CTR and endurance rides)
- Warwick County Park (35-mi CTR previously staged from here; trails
connect with Horseshoe trail)

Not all of these locations may have adequate staging areas, or even allow
large groups of horses on trail anymore (I believe Blue Mt. was a victim of
State Gamelands / Forest rule changes). However, at least four host, or
have hosted, rides in the past -- good place to start in any case.

Good luck!

Kevin
