Kathy -
I have a horse that was like that. You could bang away
all you wanted (hoof, shoe, etc) and he was fine, but
as soon as a nail was put in and it, the shoe and his
hoof connected, he FREAKED. It was like connecting the
three gave him a huge shock or something, his reaction
was so violent. We tried EVERYTHING to desensitive him
to it and nothing worked. Finally, we decided to
sedate him for hind shoes to keep everyone safe. After
three years of sedation, the farrier one day decided
to give it a try without. It was quite funny (and a
huge relief); my horse assumed he was sedated and put
himself into a little trance and was fine. He
literally self-sedated himself after that when shod.
BUT, if there was too much stimuli (ie too many people
around) he wouldn't do it and would freak again. It
was a little quirk that never really went away, and I
was so fortunate to have a farrier who was patient
about it. My horse has been barefoot now for five
years and I wonder what would happen if we tried to
shoe him again (I'm not planning on it, at any rate).
