RE: [RC] Free Horses ... - Burnett, Elly

Title: RE: [RC] Free Horses ...

Kids sure bounce a lot better than us adults, that's for sure!  I didn't start really riding until I was 12, and by then had learned more common sense and caution than I though was good for me.  I eventually taught lessons at the barn I rode at during high school, and used to watch those little kids and their ponies with complete awe.  Take a jump bareback at breakneck speed?  Sure, why not!?!  Watch me, I can do headstands while my pony trots!  When they'd come off, they'd jump back up, dust themselves off, and take off running after their ponies.  I used to wish I had those experiences as a kid, but now that I'm older (not terribly much older, though), I value my chicken-sh*t nature.

It's funny the things we did as kids we would never want kids to do today.   I remember jumping on an arab mare bareback with a halter and going down the road for a ride.  When I got back I was told she wasn't "broke".  PP

Very good point, Stacey. When I was a kid, my friend & I rode green horses all the time. Some of our friends could afford well trained horses, but they never did learn as much from them as we did. Neither of us ever got hurt either. Maybe kids just aren't as tough these days? <g>                   Marirose
