RE: [RC] to blanket or not - heidi

There are days when I would gladly trade sub-zero for mud...  <g>  They do love to roll in the snow--but it is pretty clean.  :-)

I agree that a wet horse in an open trailer is a candidate for some sort of blanketing until he gets home--and a light wool cooler is a good suggestion.

**I would add, though, that dirt is not a factor here when it is truly
winter--there isn't any dirt exposed for them to get into, so they stay
pretty clean, even if ridden.**

Consider yourself lucky.  Winter in VA has no lack of mud and dirt to cake
on heavy coats.  Mine love to roll, and will make a beeline for the
muckiest, muddiest spot they can find. Failing that, they head for any
available dirt.  It is luxury to rub into heads, ears, and cheeks -- which,
fortunately, are the only parts showing. I have them clothed in turnout rugs
that are designed to cover  from the top of the neck to halfway down the
tail.  From hocks and knees downward, and forward from the ears is all I
have to clean -- the rest of the body stays spotless under the rugs.  I love
it!

And for the original poster who asked about transporting a sweat dampened
horse in an open (stock) trailer, in the cold, for 30 minutes -- if it was
my horse, I would put a lightweight wool cooler on for the trailer ride
home.  The horse will stay warm and comfortable under a cooler, and you
won't have to worry about the possibility of it getting chilled.
