I sure would agree with this assessment, as well.  I think riders KNOW when their horses are fit to continue, whatever the venue, and, hopefully, whatever the distance and experience level of rider.

 

If a rider doesn't know, what in the world are they doing at an endurance race?

 

Gaining "experience" at the expense of the horse?
