RE: [RC] [RC] The quest for the turtle award - how close to cut it... - Nancy Mitts

Kristi,
I started out on a horse with a big trot & fast walk. When I started his daughter she had a nice soft lttle 7-8 mile trot & a disappointingly slow walk. She wanted to canter more, too, and I wouldn't let her because I was used to doing all trot. She kind of "lost" the willingness to canter. I now have to work on that more.
I would recommend to keep on working the canter some, both leads, while conditioning along with the trot. Horses that trot "slower" (actually "shorter") can often continue their little trot where a longer strided horse has to walk. It's handy to develop a nice canter as well. You can sometimes find a place to make up time on a ride that has too many really, really, slow sections. I also believe it promotes long term soundness to develop all the muscle groups of the different gaits and be able to call on them as needed during a ride.

Seriously, I guess my original question stemmed from the fact that my retired horse and his 9-10 mph trot still only got us a 4 or 5 hour LD (ok, I suppose the nap and grazing time messsed it up a bit). > Kristi
