[RC] WEG 2006 - k s swigart

These are the results of Toft owned horse Bremevale
Justice. Justice has completed 16 x 100 mile rides,
usually competitively. In addition to the above ,
these also include a Tevis buckle (18th place at only
attempt) and 4 Quilty buckles (including 2x 1st place,
once in LW and once in HW divisions). See
www.aera.asn.au and scroll about half way down the
page for more details on Justice.

Not only that, but I consider (judging from the posted results) the
performance of Peter Toft at the WEG to be an absolutely stellar display
of endurance horsemanship. At the beginning of the ride, he was running
his horse fairly close to the front, and then dropped back to complete
somewhere around the middle (I can't be bothered to actually look up the
exact information about placings). THIS tells me that, while he felt
that his horse might have the speed and conditioning to place well, when
it became apparent that this wasn't the case for the day, that he
actually SLOWED down and continued to ride the horse within its
capabilities...and proved that he knew how to do this by finishing the
course.

I could, of course, be all wrong about this; but that is the way it
looks from looking at the assorted vet check results. Whatever the
right of the reasons; however, it does not change the fact that he DID
complete the course.

To me, the ability to constantly re-evaluate the horse's condition
during the course of the ride and to know when to stop asking so much
before asking too much is the mark of greatness in endurance. The
ability to do it even at a championship where the pressures are huge is
even more admirable.
