RE: [SPAM] [RC] cost of horse living - heidi

Gee, reading all the costs everywhere else, I'm sure glad I moved back into the boonies in Idaho....

$50 per month per horse for feed in winter, negligible costs for pasture in summer (although some labor to irrigate).  Most of the broodies are out on pasture for 6-7 months.  So figure $300 per broodmare per year, and $600 per year for those that are up on the dryland.  Add another $80 or so per year for the little bit that we supplement the competition horses.

Farrier work--broodmares almost never, because of our wonderful abrasive ground.  Competition horses are only shod during the ride season--average 6 shoeings per year at $60 each, so $360.

Dewormer--ivermectin in bulk, less than $3 per dose.  So $12 per year.

Vaccines--we are high and dry (no mosquitos) and have no neighbors, so only vaccinate the competition horses.  I give my own, and only do West Nile and 4-way as needed.  Roughly $25 per horse.

Only need Coggins tests if we ride out of state--most years we end up getting them on 3-4 head at $20 each.

We ARE selenium-deficient here, so do have E-Se shots periodically--figure at least 3 per year for the broodies (that's about $25) and that or a bit more for the competition horses.

In rough figures, our costs range from about $350 per year for horses that get maximal pasture time to close to $1000 per year for horses that are up and competing all year.

Here in North Florida, it’s not TOO bad.

$100 per month for a good quality feed and grass hay ($1200 per year per horse)

$20 per horse every 5-6 weeks for a foot trim.  $60-$80 if shod. ($200-600 per year, per horse)

$10 every three months for wormer ($40 per year per horse)

$100 for fall shots (EWT, Rhino Flu, West Nile)  ($100 per horse)

$150-200 for spring shots and teeth float (EWT, Rhino Flu, West Nile, Rabies, Coggins) ($150-200 per horse)

$25 every three months or so for De-Sanding ($100 per horse per year)
