[RC] Withers/white spots - Barb Peck

Elly is right on.
There are many degrees of damage.. some more severe than others.

There are different follicles that produce winter and summer hair
that's why sometimes damage done in summer goes away with the
winter coat and visa versa.

Permanent white spots can occur from short term deep damage
or constant long term moderate damage.

It's easy to see rubbing problems (becuase it breaks the hair and gives a
visual clue)
and it's easy to miss areas that have skin compression but don't produce alot
of pain.

The reason for the white is because the skin cells are so damaged that they no
longer have any pigment. It's the same principle behind freeze branding of
animals. It gets very technical, but I do not believe the nerves are affected
from this--the lack of color is because of damage to skin and hair follicles.
But the fact that there are white spots mean there is significant damage to at
least the skin.
