I had a quarter sized spot on a bay horse that was white.  Within 3 months, the color returned.  Perhaps the damage wasn’t significant enough that it was permanently damaged.  Also, spot wasn’t solid white, but sprinkled with white.

Yes, at the risk of being anal-retentively technical, if the follicles were ever damaged to the point the hair came in white, it would never grow back colored.  There's always Just for Men....
