RE: [RC] Calories Burned While Riding - Sarah Seashols

Of course, it also shows that we get approximately the same workout trotting
that we would grooming for an hour. But I know which one I like more...

Maybe next time I'm in bed, rationalizing to myself why I don't need to get
up early for that conditioning ride, I'll remember that if I don't go
riding, I can groom for an hour for my exercise. (leaving me with a clean,
but fat horse) That should get me up out of bed.

(Note: this does not mean that I do not groom my horses. They're clean
enough when I need them to be. (Are these kinds of notices required for all
Ridecamp posts nowadays? I'll add it anyway, just in case it gets
cross-posted...)) :)

The next time anyone makes a comment to you that "the horse does all the
work" and that horseback riding isn't "real" exercise, refer them to this
chart.

http://www.nutristrategy.com/activitylist.htm -- go to page 2 on this list
to see the info on horseback riding. It's interesting to compare with other
forms of exercise. Also quite interesting is to look at: Farming, baling
hay, cleaning barn! You know, even grooming a horse will burn a lot of
calories.

Note, heavier riders do burn more calories per hour, in exercise. There are
*some* benefits to being heavier, after all. <grins>
