Don't forget RO Grand Sultan, another of the "perfect 10" horses (as was Khalil Khai)--horses with over 10,000 miles, 10 consecutive years in competition, 10 or more wins, and 10 or more BCs...

 

Or RT Muffin--the all-time winningest horse in the sport with well over 100 wins, who went over 9000 miles and competed for over 15 years.

 

Many of the other high mileage horses were pretty competitive as well.

Typically not, though there are exceptions. Joe Long's horse Kahlil went
pretty fast, and had quite a lot of miles (11,525 - 7th highest lifetime
total). It's also true that the younger you race a horse, the less likely
the horse is to last in the sport.
