RE: [RC] Training Horses - Smith, Dave

Yes, Mickey.  I clicker-trained both my mustangs to accept their fly masks and for one, to lift his feet for hoof cleaning. I also used it to train my horse to lower his head and keep still while putting on his halter/bridle and taking it off.  It is a great tool that can be used for a number of lessons.  One point of interest, with a bit of clicker training, my horse was okay with putting his fly mask on, but got scared when he heard the Velcro “tear sound” upon taking it off.  So I used that “tear sound” like a clicker.  Tear open the Velcro, reward with a treat.  Within a few minutes he was looking forward to the tear sound.  No further difficulties  I highly recommend this tool for any animal training.  As one great European animal trainer once said, “If it eats, it can be trained.”

Subject: [RC] Training Horses

Does any one use "clicker" training with their horses?

I have a dog that refused to obey any commands until I started "clicker" training.  It was the tool he needed to understand what I wanted.  He is a very well behaved and obedient member of the family now.
