Morgan Power at Nationals!  Part One

Just got back from some gorgeous fall riding in the valley like 100 miles worth have eons of congrats from well wishers wanting a story. So although my brain and body have not fully recovered I will do my best! So here goes:

When the Nationals came this direction a few years back and were in Kentucky I so wanted to go but common sense overrules at times and I knew a Morgan attempting a 100 in the south would be suicidal so it hurt but I stayed home. However this year with them being in Virginia in October on trails Hawk and me had been over many times we might have a chance. So way back in March the Ka-Ching started. (meaning the sound a cash register makes like $ signs)

Ka-ching number one send a deposit in for hook-up as well as a paddock for Hawk to Fort Valley stable.

Ka-ching # 2 repeated once a month after a series of three beginning in July start  Hawk on some joint support. (I believe I need it more though).

Next send a deposit in well before the deadline and start worrying something will go wrong before October 21st. Of course it did, Hawk started forging and ripping off shoes and hoof wall with them. Therefore between mid-August and mid-October he was shod three times (no discounts there either) adding to the ka-chings and to the worry with the farrier insisting his walls were not good enough to gamble putting pads on. Since he's never needed them before what could I do but agree?  And of course worry.

Thursday before the ride we put more coins in the register paying the rest of the entry, buying extra meal tickets for the crew, as well as finishing paying for the hook-up. Ok on to the ride.

Five a.m. Hawk is putting blisters on my hands pulling hard up the road to Edinburgh. His brain seemed to have shrunk down to Arabian size or maybe since we had not done a 100 in so long he forgot that starting out in the dark meant you were going to be out there a long time. We went down the gap onto very Morgan friendly trotting roads and into the first hold 23 miles in 3 hours. It was also about the same distance to the next hold which concerned me as Hawk needs eons of feed and like me prefers long holds and short loops not the other way around.
