[RC] Fw: [RC] Mane mites - Now Change of Attitude - - Lani M Olson

Forgive me, just one more thing. Barb, since my vet isn't familiar with all this could you tell me about the topical application, how much and where? I believe you mentioned putting drops on the mane but not the tail. Talking to an old cowboy friend he said one of the dude strings in the Black Hills was treated this way but said occasionally the skin would actually blister off, so I'd sure like to know exactly what I'm doing. Are the mites only on the mane and tail, or are they all over the body?

First Barb, let me say thanks. Your post was the one that put me on the track of bird mites, as the farm where my mare had gone for breeding had peacocks and geese galore, all free-ranging. I will see about the topical ivermectin. At this point, I'm hoping that mites truly are the cause of the tail and mane rubbing so it can finally STOP.

OK- My last post on the subject.
At least your Vet has come around a little bit....
The internet isn't ALL bad.

If your horse DOES have the mane mite.
Oral paste worming may not get the concentration high
enough in the skin to kill them.

Maybe you can talk him into giving you the liquid ivermectin for
your worming program- so that you'll have some to apply
topically to the mane when the oral route doesn't work..
