[RC] Equine cohabiation with Fowl - (MANE MITE) - Barb Peck

For 15 years we have had as many as 100 chickens (Bantams) at a time running
loose during the day- all over the pastures and hanging around the horses
stalls, on our lawn etc... etc (we sell organic eggs) and have never had a
problem mixing horses and chickens. Never an illness one having to do one with
another.

If you live in the northern states- there might be one problem-
you do have to watch out for the "Northern Fowl Mite" which will live in the
skin of a horse mane, create intense itching and cause them to lose mane hair
(You can kill the mite by 2 applications of liquid ivermectin -dripped on the
skin of the mane with a pipette - spaced 7 days appart)

Wild birds can transmit this mite by building nests in the stalls above the
horses... and you might have the problem if you allowed domestic birds to roost
above the horses...

PS I have a friend who races pidgeons- and he's had pidgeon fever from
breathing the 'quano'... so the trick is with birds - to keep the flock down to
a manageable size- and
let them keep themselves clean (confinement creates a terrible amount of
'dust')
