Does anybody just happen to have at their fingertips the number of horses in the year 1900 in the United States compared to 2000?

In a paper written by James William Hynes, he quotes the United States Census Reports, (1900a)

http://txspace.tamu.edu/bitstream/1969.1/3907/1/etd-tamu-2005A-AGED-hynes.pdf#search=%221900%20census%20%22number%20of%20horses%22%22

stating that there were 18,280,007 horses in the US, 86.2% on farms and 13.8% in "barns and enclosures".

In this article:

the American Horse Council is cited as the source for a figure of 6.9 million horses in the US in 1999.

In September, 2005, a study conducted by Deloitte Consulting, LLC and commissioned by the American Horse Council Foundation stated that the estimated horse population in this country had reached 9.2 million.
