Don't concentrate on how many miles you have left...concentrate on how many you've DONE!!  If you're on the third loop, then you're over half done!!!  You can do this...less than half the ride left to do!  Less than an LD left!!  You're over the halfway point...it's all downhill now!!  Think just about how long the loop is that you're on...say it's 13 miles.  So just think that all you need to do is ride 13 miles...heck, that's just a short conditioning ride...and then you've just got one loop left.
The trick is to play the game of "the glass is half full vs the glass is half empty" with yourself.

First loop's a blur

2nd loop, you're thinking too hard

3rd loop you're tired and not sure you can do it...tend to lose momentum
and slow down

4th...WHEEE!!! Fun, relaxed, know you can make it. Easier than the other 3

Question.. so how do you get over the 3rd loop blues?

I've attempted 2 50s, completed one. THe first attempt was the
Oakland HIlls Elevator ride where we elevated to the 50. We got lost up this
neverending horrendous hill and lost quite a bit of momentum after having
to backtrack in the sun. I felt so bad for my poor decision and Isabella probably
felt that and we pulled after going 42 or so miles because I was just pooped.

At Lake Sonoma we completed, but walked most of the way in because we were
alone and Isabella seemed tired to me. I got the same feeling of losing momentum
and being spent.

We ride slow.. back of the pack. Do I need to step it up a little more so we don't
get tired so easily? Get ourselves better in shape? She always gets good vet scores
and is perky and happy afterwards.

Riders, what do you do to get yourself over that hump?
