RE: [RC] horizontal hoof cracks?? - Jim Holland

Two major things.

Injury of some kind of trauma to the coronary band, but usually this will
not be across the entire hoof.

Stress, which can cause a crack all the way across. Any unusual "change" in
a horse's life will cause rings. Extreme stress, such as metabolic stress
from an Endurance ride or an injury of almost any type can cause these rings
to become a crack. You can see the major events in a horse's life over the
last year by looking at his feet. You might find this interesting:

and this:

These normally grow out without a problem with normal hoof care.

Subject: [RC] horizontal hoof cracks??

Hi everyone -
What causes horizontal hoof cracks, how do I prevent them, and how big of a
problem are they??

My mare has a horizontal crack on her right rear, about 1/2 to 3/4" long,
1/2" from the coronary band. It was not there yesterday. I called my farrier

(not the best, but he means well and he does come out in a pinch, bless his
heart!) and he said it's nothing to worry about. It is superficial and
doesn't go through the hoof wall. He said her feet are in great shape and he

just rasped the edges and filed off a little of the toe. I asked what caused

it and he said he didn't know, but I didn't need to be concerned. Well, I
*am* concerned! My vet said it could be from stomping, if the flies were
bothering her. I asked what I should do about it and he said use more fly
spray! Grrrr. Any other ideas?

Oh, and I don't use any hoof supplements, but I'm going to start!

Thanks -
Jen and Gypsy Dancer - errr...Gypsy Stomper!
