RE: [RC] [RC] Resting HR on young horses- now skeletal fitness - Jennifer Adam

? (Biggest problem is that ones with such
superior cardiovascular systems tempt you to ride beyond what their
skeletal systems are conditioned to take.)

I'm no cardiologist, but hope that thumbnail sketch helps.

This is something that worries me - there are plenty of ways to monitor my horse's cardiovascular fitness and I can keep track of her improvements fairly easily. Her muscular fitness is also relatively easy to assess. But how can I be sure that her bones and joints are adequately conditioned without stressing them too much? Right now I simply follow guidelines from Nancy Loving's All Horse Systems Go and Go the Distance, but I feel sort of in the dark because I can't assess it for myself.

When I first started running track I could run 5 miles without getting tired - but I struggled with shin splints and a couple of stress fractures all season. Coach made me back off a bit until my bones and ligaments had adjusted to the level of fitness of the rest of me. I don't want to put my horse through that! :)
