Re: [RC] Resting HR on young horses/Stroke Volume/Bradycardia - Truman Prevatt

One of the best horses I ever had the pleasure of knowing was Carlos Crespo's horse Cody. Cody had a great record - carrying a HW to the OD Trophy one year. I can tell you from riding many a mile with Carlos and Cody and later Carlos' son Daniel and Cody that Cody was not slug and loved to run.

Cody's resting heart rate was 22. Many of people thought there was something wrong with their stethoscopes when they took his pulse. His recoveries were as soon as he stopped he was down.

Cody died in a lightning strike a few years ago.

Me too, Angie: my slowest horse had a resting heart rate of 28. If you could get him motivated, he could finish without looking like he'd done more than walk from the trailer. But motivating him exhausted me! He's now a beloved family/lesson horse.

The resting heart rate is closely
associated with "stroke volume" the higher the stroke volume the lower
the resting rate. It seems the stroke volume is genetically programmed
and fixed in horses.

The slowest horse I competed had the lowest Resting Heart Rate. He would vet in at 28. Kaboot was good for me, not the *best* at recoveries but pretty respectable. He vetted in at 44. Merlyn & Ben were the best at recoveries. Their RHR was 32 to 36.
