Re: [RC] TWH - saddle fit - Truman Prevatt

Misty was the typical slab sided - deep heart girth TWH. However, the sides were far apart. I had a heck of a time with a saddle. I went through three or four that were suppose to fit - none did. I even had one of the TWH saddle makers from TN (whose saddle of course fit 99% of all walking horse ) send me a bare tree so I could put it on her back and look at it. The pitch was right but the points were not far enough apart so they would have dug into the wither as the saddle bridged. That's when I went to a custom saddle.

The Duetts aren't that expensive for the broad backed horse. Many Lipizzaner owners use them as an affordable saddle, their horses are not overly wide (13" or so in RP parlance) but very flat backed.

I had TWHs for ten years, and as Bruce and Truman say, freeing up that wither/shoulder is key. I saw a huge difference in my old fart after switching to an OF from a typical TWH flat saddle. This was in the early 90s, and he was a huge guy, bet he was being horribly pinched at the bottom of the tree points, I was relatively clueless about saddle fit then, but knew the flex-panel saddle would be a better choice. My other TWH was more the typical slab-sided type, with a deep heart girth--like Bobbie Lieberman's Gypsy if anyone knows her. They both went well in that saddle. It wasn't until I went back to Arabs that saddle fit became an issue again.

So pleased to hear of the DQP disruption at the Celebration. :-) Makes my day.

Lynne
