Re: [RC] RHR in youngsters - Sisu West Ranch

I wouldn't particularly worry about the heart rate of a youngster. While a naturally low resting pulse is a positive in distance riding, it is much more important in CTR than Endurance and LD.

The criteria of 60 bpm is well above a true resting pulse for all horses. Because of this recovery time is mostly determined by conditioning, and management. If a horse isintellegently and appropriately conditiond, a somewhat lower natural resting pulse may cut a minute off of the recovery time. For most of us this does not matter..
1. Conditioning. In addition to the usual LSD and then faster long distance work, interval training can easily make 8 bpm difference at a given recovery time.

2. Management Slow down before vet checks. Walk and lead the horse the last few hundred yards.. If it is hot and humid, cool with lots of water. Strip tack (this alone can often save 2-6 minutes at a check).

3. Horse conformation. Stocky heavily muscled horses are harder to cool. In humid conditions this can save 6 to 15 minutes.

4. Pain. Many horses will exhibit a "hanging" pulse if there is any pain. Do what is required to get the horse pain free. Lameness issues, saddle fit, tack galls.

5. Attitude. Experienced horses pulse down faster. Calm horses pulse down faster. Mad horses pulse down slowly. If you are fighting with a horse using a harsh bit he will be mad, excited and in pain.
