Here's a lattice style braiding that has been shown on the E-friends board. Several of us are doing this now. It just looks cool and keeps the hair off the horse's neck. Char Antuzzi did up Gali's mane this way for Tevis:
 
It's really pretty easy. 
 
Oh, yeah!  I used to do this to the Haflinger's mane.  I think it is called 'plaiting" the mane.  Not positive though.  Very pretty!  I like the triangle shape.  I used to just end each strand with its own rubber band.  This looks much tidier.
