Re: [RC] [RC] Braiding the mane - Diane TrefethenDiana Peterson wrote:IMO....definetly a old wifes tale.... my horse is always sweaty under his mane.Well... ok. That's good. Sweat draws heat from the body AND as the mane moves back and forth it promotes evaporation so the heat is carried away. I think that sounds pretty plausible. After all, if the mane did NOT contribute to cooling of the horse, wouldn't the Bedouins have bred for short manes, ala the Zebra, instead of for long, fine ones? As to why a lot of wild equines in the warmer regions don't have much mane, a long mane would have more negatives in the survival department than the positive of just cooling. Just a little extrapolation here. No source gurus :) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
