[RC] BC scores - Michael Maul

Here's something to note about BC scoring and the effect of time and weight.

Time is a factor in BC. For every minute you finish behind the first place rider - you lose one point up to a max of 200. The first rider in loses 0 points and a rider who comes in an hour after the first place finisher loses 60 points on the overall score.

For weight - you lose 1/2 point for every pound you are lighter than the heaviest rider up to a max of 100. The heaviest rider loses 0 points and a rider plus tack who is 50 lbs lighter loses 25 points.

So being 50 lbs lighter than the heaviest rider is equivalent to coming in 25 minutes after the first place finisher.

And then there's the vet score - recovery, hydration, lesions, soundness, and qual. mvmt. each on a 1-10 range with the result multiplied by 10 for a max of 1000. Weight can cost you at the most 100 and time at the most 200. Time and weight are subtracted from the vet score.

If you and another rider have about the same vet score - then finishing faster or weighing more will tip the balance. The thought is that the faster finishing horse or the one carrying more weight with the same vet score is the better horse for BC.

I've certainly seen small riders - Lari Shea - for one who worked with her horses to show well for BC and despite being probably 110 lbs did well.

Working with your horse to improve the vet score has more effect that gaining or carrying weight...

Finishing earlier than the heavier riders has a 2X effect compared to the weight. Finishing at the same time as the HW rider is not a good strategy.
