Karen, you are correct.  I happen to be one of the HWs who IS overweight, but Bruce is one of those who doesn't really need to lose much.  I do think that the HW division percentagewise DOES have more overweight people in it, simply because if we weren't, we wouldn't be HWs.... 
 
And seriously, the FIT HW who doesn't need to lose weight (and probably shouldn't!) often has a considerable advantage over smaller people simply due to their own athletic prowess.  I've seen some light FWs really struggle wtih a lot of issues in this sport--staying hydrated, having enough caloric reserves, etc. 
 
Instead of fussing over how much they are slowed down by being heavy, the fit HWs should learn to ride to their strengths and protect their weaknesses, just as riders of all other sizes do.

Not everyone in the heavyweight division is overweight.  I'm not arguing
with your post, but I do think it should be recognized that it's not always
something one can do something about.
