During these discussions, the idea that heavy weight riders can and do significantly help their horses by running always comes up. Now flat FEI type races are won in say 10 hours. That means they are going 10 mph or more on the trail. How many miles can the best human run at 10 mph? If a very hard ride is won in 20 hours, the human only has to run 5 mph to help.

There is more to it than that, but I think it is obvious that running to help the horse is only practical on hard hilly rides, if you are hoping to turn in a world class winning time.
