[RC] More on Falling and Helmets - rides2far

I read that the reason the riding helmets cover lower down the back of
your head was to protect from the hoof kicking or stepping on you
(something bikes haven't mastered yet).

A better way to win your argument is simply have him look in the mirror.
That "lower" part helps get rid of "mushroom head"...one of the biggest
complaints with helmets. I'm having the opposite dilemma. I don't want
to buy a bike helmet; they look weird to me. My daughter's old riding
helmet is very close to the bike helmet look and I'm thinking I may just
use that.

P.S. I think the styrofoam in your helmet loses its strength with age and
should be replaced regularly even if you don't have a fall. That's how I
always justify my new helmet. Either that or leave the old one hanging
where a bird will build a nest in it.

Distance is just one component of impact pressure. Newton was the
"The Man" leading to the study of kinetics. A few of the measurable
aspects related to falling from a horse are:
- Forces during aerial phase of the fall
- Trajectory
- Weight and mass depending on what you want to measure
- Velocity
- Momentum (product of mass and velocity)
- Force of gravity
- Area of impact force
