[RC] sei rating # for equestrian headgear - April Allison

The Safety Equipment Institute certifies helmets which meet or exceed the American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM) F-1163(A) standard for equestrian headgear.

Forgot to give the #.  Helmets have the ASTM # printed on the box. If it doesn't have the #, you don't want that helmet, it hasn't been rated.
You want a helmet that says it is SEI Certified with a ASTM rating of at least F1163.  A lower rating will not provide adequate protection from a riding injury, even if it is falling from a standing horse.
If you husbands bike helmet is rated ASTM F1163 or better, he can wear it to ride. If not get one that is.
Get a jello mold, put it in a ziplock bag, put it in his helmet, drop it from the distance his head is from the ground when he rides. If it is an F1163 helmet or better, the mold will survive without showing damage. In a lower rated helmet, you get a bag of squished jello. That would be his brain in a fall. :o)
