RE: [RC] another foot question for Kat, or any one else - Karen Standefer

False sole seems to be an adaptation mechanism for pathology. And, I'm
talking about the false sole that is about 3/8" thick and sheds out in big
chunks. Typically, it is seen in horses with laminitis where the sole
material has also been compromised, possibly by a dropped coffin bone. I
don't know that it's necessarily the false sole that makes the horse sore.
I think it may be the condition that causes the false sole to be created in
the first place.

There is not any research that can explain this. But, I've seen it in a lot
of horses (also mainly barefoot). If you x-ray the horse, I think you'll
find that the distal descent of the coffin bone is more than desired
(probably more than 1cm between the hairline and the extensor process of the
coffin bone).

Another observation: usually when the horse sheds the false sole, the hoof
conformation has improved over what it was earlier in the year.

Karen

What can you tell me about horses that "tend" to develop a false sole?
Get very sore from it, too. Barefoot or shod, but worse barefoot.
Thanks. Cindy
