Gosh Jim,
You make it sound common. I've been competing since 87 and have *first
hand* knowledge of exactly one death. Which is exactly how many I'd had
witnessed *pleasure* riding. (neither were mine)
I started in '89. The first ride in FL was '86. There were always rumors down in FL that "up nawth" (in the region) there were horse deaths at that time. I don't know if it were true or not.

I personally can name 3 metabolic deaths in the SE regions since I started. The one in '96 (I believe that was the year) where you were one last year. Then I was at a ride in South FL in '93 where we had a horse ridden into the ground fell down at the third vet check at the vets feet and later died.

We've had two injury accidents I know of - a broken leg about 4 years ago and a broken back two years ago.

As far as I know that's in since '93. Can't comment before that. I would like to say if my first year I saw a horse die a an endurance ride - that would probably have been it for me.
