Re: [RC] [RC] [RC] OT-horse wormer question - Dyane Smith

Last time I was at the feed store, I noticed there is a new (to me) wormer
that you can top feed over grain (or hopefully Equine Senior, since my
horses don't get grained). I can't remember the name but it seems to come
in a package for one time use. Has anyone used it? What was your
experience with it?

Dyane (proud owner of one grey horse who will try to smear regular wormer
over me, the fence post, himself, anywhere but in the mouth)

I'd be perfectly comfortable doing a powerpack on a horse with an unknown
parasite load. Fenbendazole is very safe and mild, and will cause much
less
stress to a rescue horse's overall health than a parasite load will. I
would NOT use one of the "nuclear" antihelmintics, ie Moxidectin, at least
until I'd cleared out most with the Panacur first.

I have zero faith in diatomaceous earth as a treatment or preventative.
Just seen too many horses with devastating parasite loads that were only
being 'treated' with DE and wormwood homeopathics.

I was under the impression that the so-called Panacur Purge was only to
be
administered to horses who where up to date on their wormings and were
NOT heavily
infested

Hi...that is why I suggested that she contact a Vet and do a fecal
count. ~:] Raven
