[RC] 100's & why I like them - Ridecamp Guest

==========================================

I'm a BIG FAN of 100's, and would like to encourage more folks to ride them.
My personal reasons for liking them: l)more time (vet checks & holds) for
taking care of your horse -- more time for the horse to eat, drink, rest.
2)importance of pacing -- really knowing your horse's strengths and weaknesses,
and always staying with your game plan 3)slower pace than 50's (in general)...
resulting in a more relaxed ride 4)The wonderful feeling that comes at 90 or
so miles when your horse gets stronger and stronger and amazes you with their
ability.
I remember one of the vets at the 20 Mule Team ride remarking the next day at
the awards ceremony how much BETTER the 100 mile horses looked than the 50 mile
horses at the finish. It had been a hot day, and the 100 mile riders took
better care of their horses -- doing the "100 mile pace", with extra time for
the horses to eat and drink, and not being in such a hurry as the 50's.
Personally, I think horses can be hurt MUCH more easily in a fast 50 than a
reasonable 100.
My message to potential 100 mile riders -- don't be afraid -- you may like it
better than 50's!
Naomi
