Re: [RC] re: ATV use in forest - Steven Proe

Hi Folks: If the horseman were to do this "Sharing of the existing trails we the horse community and the hiking community will loose-out.

At this present time we are first status "Stakeholders" any new group that has a desire to use the existing trails will be causing a "Conflict with the existing user groups/Stakeholders". My suggestion is that if we assist any new user group/s, that we encourage the expansion of Public/Federal/State lands and make sure that the new user groups have the regulatory agency create addition trails to accommodate the Nw User Groups. Not to share them unless, the proposed trails are wide enough with significant site distances so that either group will not be able to create a "Surprise Incident".

There is also the issue of the type of decay and erosion that is a result of bike usage, that causes a narrow deep continuance that can cause injury to our partners and ourselves if we have to walk though these ruts created by the bikes and erosion.

Again just my opinion based on my personal experiences.

I agree with you, Cindy. The only way we can save trails is to work with
other groups - all other groups. Friendliness goes a long way.

This isn't going to be a popular stand with some of you, BUT, I caution
you to be very careful about attacking other multiple user groups. My
experience is that once agencies start banning activities, horses are next
on the list right after ATV, motorcycles, etc. Then, there's NO ONE left
to fight for us because 90% of hikers hate horses on trails. However, for
those of us who cooperate with other user groups these same folks will
come to bat for us and work out cooperative deals with us to share trails.
One other thought is that many of us use motorcycles and ATVs to mark
trails. We don't appreciate you taking that away from us. Just another
point of view. Cindy
