Re: [RC] (RC] Commute - Hybrid Vehicles - Barbara McCrary

I doubt we could grow sugar cane much of anywhere in the USA except for Hawaii, since it is a tropical crop. And the little we could grow would not supply the nation's needs. Americans are unwilling to give up driving cars, regardless of what they use for fuel. We couldn't even go back to horses and buggies, because I'd bet we couldn't grow enough hay to feed the necessary number of horses. And can you imagine the FUSS most people would make over manure, flies, smell, etc. on city streets? Oh migosh, what a fuss. So....we have cars, and we won't give them up, so where do we go from here?? All I know is that we had better figure out something, because we are mortgaging our souls to the mid-east countries for oil. That's more dangerous than I want to think about.

My not-so-humble opinion....

I agree. But being more efficient is important, also.

I read that Brazil has been independent of oil imports, for some time -- because they have sugar cane-producing ethanol. I read that sugar cane is
much more efficient, and does not produce as much CO2, as corn-based ethanol
does. So, instead of promoting corn ethanol, we need to promote sugar cane.
Any ethanol scientists out there to comment on that?

I think the MOST important thing about hybrid cars is that they have lower
emissions than straight gasoline cars, putting less C02 into our already
seriously handicapped ozone. (causing global warming) This is our reason
for
having a Toyota Hybrid Highlander SUV (35-40 mpg) which we love. As well
we
run bio-diesel in the truck, again putting out 10 - 15% of the emissions
of
gas and regular diesel. Saving money on Mileage is great, but just a perk
when it comes to the BIG picture. We DO need a planet to ride on ;)...Just
2
cents from the proverbial lurkers corner.
