RE: [RC] Who says it's humid! - Rae Callaway

It's been in the mid 90's in Houston and the Weather Channel says right now
the humidity is 90%, but it will go down to 60% this afternoon. I've always
thought white horses did better in the heat too, but when I get home from
work at 4 pm, the white, light gray and all 4 chestnuts will be wet, but the
black and bay are dry and fine. I'm kinda confused on the black - I thought
that mare would be hotter than any of them. I feed at 7 and when I go back
out at 8 to kick them out of the barn, they're all standing right in front
of their fans. It's cute.

Subject: [RC] Who says it's humid!

When I moved to South Eastern Colorado in the early 90's I thought
it was
quite humid.

I found the heat index chart at http://www.crh.noaa.gov/pub/heat.php

It's 85 and 61% humidity here right now at 10 PM. and I'm a couple of
hours north of Jody. When you drive down my road at night you have to put
your windshield wipers on intermittent. The humidity builds up on your
windshield.

It was 97 today. If the humidity was even 50% that would put us at about
110 index According to this website that is calculated for shade and a
light breeze. Direct sunlight can raise it another 15 degrees. All I want
to eat is tomato sandwiches and watermelon for dessert. Jello is OK, ice
cream seems too thick.

Checked Gunner when I fed. He feels slick, as if he hasn't even sweated.
Looks totally unconcerned. Good day to have 3 white horses. We rode 5
hrs. Saturday mostly walking with some big hills. The non-endurance
horses in the group were panting like crazy but our guys really didn't
seem affected at all.

Funny someone mentioned cats. Our cats look hotter than the horses or
dogs. I've heard you can tell the temperature by the length of a cat.
Mine are getting very elongated.

Angie
